Specialist Areas
Priya joined the General Insurance group at TurksLegal in 2011. She acts exclusively for insurers providing advice on liability and indemnity issues.
Prior to joining TurksLegal, Priya spent 6 years acting for insurers in insurance litigation, personal injury and property matters.
Priya’s expertise is in property damage (both commercial and domestic), liability, fraud claims and recoveries. She advises insurers on issues involving the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 including indemnity, policy interpretation, non-disclosure and misrepresentation.
Since joining TurksLegal, Priya has also gained experience in advising Trade Credit insurers in relation to indemnity, policy interpretation and non-disclosure issues. She appears in jurisdictions from the Local Court to the Supreme Court as well as providing assistance and advice to insurers in the preparation of submissions to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Priya applies her skills and expertise with an approach that balances the commercial needs of clients with the practical realities of litigation.
Some of Priya’s key cases are as follows:
- Involved in defending a local council in the Supreme Court brought by local residents with respect to notification of soil erosion at their properties.
- Achieving a favourable result for a client in a mediation involving a large claim for damages for personal injury.
- Settling a fraudulent claim in the District Court with a verdict for the defendant in favour of an insurer client.
Priya has experience writing and presenting to clients on her area of expertise: She contributed to TurkAlerts with paper on non-disclosure and misrepresentation in Trade Credit Policies. Priya has also presented to Trade Credit insurers and brokers in Sydney and Melbourne on non-disclosure and misrepresentation and the Insurance Contracts Act.
