2009 ANZIIF TurksLegal Scholarship

Question & Answer with the 2008 ANZIIF TurksLegal Claims Scholarship winner, Nigel Day:
Why did you enter the 2008 scholarship?
I believe that by stretching one’s self and embracing professional opportunities outside the usual ‘day to day’ work requirements, your overall enjoyment, job satisfaction, self esteem and personal reward are also increased. With that in mind, I encouraged my team to enter and l also thought I would try my luck and submit an entry that took a more emotion-slanted and different view to the well trodden topic of ‘Disaster Claims Response’.
Why did you choose the topic ‘Building a Better System for Disaster Claims Response’?
I have been involved in Disaster Response for almost 30 years. It is a passion of mine and dealing with the emotional and common sense side of the issue, rather than the process, is often overlooked. Most large insurers simply look at the numbers and a set of procedures rather than the social consequences.
What were the key highlights of the conference you attended?
The Conference in Seattle provided me with an opportunity to gain information and to meet with fellow claims professionals from around the world. Each presentation was informative and specific and encouraged interaction. I met many people and it was interesting to note that many of the issues and concerns dealt with by claims professionals in Australia are also common to claims professionals in other parts of the world.
What would you say to fellow professionals who are considering entering the scholarship this year?
The scholarship is an opportunity for you to promote your ideas and philosophies, even if they are not immediately adopted but could just provide the imperative for the industry ‘sit up and take notice’.
How has winning the scholarship assisted your professional development?
I believe it has assisted my own personal development and also my appreciation of claims issues affecting the industry globally. Learning and appreciation is a long term investment, and like experience, it cannot be gained overnight.
