SCHOLARSHIP – 2010 QUESTIONS
---------------------------------------------------------------
Question 1
Claims are a vital part of any insurance organisation. What does a career in claims offer to an insurance professional and why is it important to foster career claims professionals? Illustrate with examples of things that may be done to encourage a career in claims and the ensuing benefits that might flow to an insurer if a career path in claims is encouraged and developed.
Question 2
The first contact many insureds have with their insurer at the time of a claim is with an external service provider such as a loss adjuster, investigator, repairer or builder. This interaction can often have a ‘make or break’ effect on an insured’s relationship with the insurer.
Outline, from a claims perspective, ways to effectively manage the involvement of these providers and customer contacts so as to enhance the claims experience for the insured and to resolve the claim quickly and effectively for both the insured and the insurer.
Your answer should be illustrated with practical examples of ways in which an insurer can increase the perceived value of insurance to the public while still achieving effective claims management and sound financial outcomes.
Question 3
The policy wording was sometimes disregarded by insurers when attempting to resolve bushfire claims in Victoria in 2009. Peter Hardman of the FOS described this as the ‘Mother Teresa’ approach by insurers.
In light of the intense media spotlight on insurers during major disaster events, should insurers approach claims by applying the strict wording of the policy or should a more liberal approach to the intention of the policy be adopted?
Is sole reference to the intention of an insurance policy, at the expense of the policy wording, an effective tool for claims management of natural disasters? Should it have a wider application for the approach of insurers to claims?
In your answer you should provide examples to support your arguments and discuss the possible ramifications of each approach.
Question 4
When a loss occurs there can be two or more factors causing or contributing to the loss. One or more of those factors may be covered by the policy of insurance and others may be excluded.
Calling upon your experience in claims administration and applying insurance principles, discuss how the claims administrator should determine the dominant, effective or ‘proximate cause’ of the loss when confronted with multiple causes or contributing causes in a loss event.
You may wish to illustrate your answer by examples you have encountered and applicable case law.
